Capable, not scared

One simple routine for real life

Street smarts are not about fear or suspicion. They are about helping kids feel capable. This book gives them four calm steps they can remember anywhere, from the walk home to a message on their phone.

  1. Stop

Pause before reacting. A breath buys time to think.

  2. Notice

Look around, listen, and pay attention to how your body feels.

  3. Think

What are my choices? Who could help me right now?

  4. Choose

Pick the safest good option, and act on it with confidence.

What’s inside

Practical help for the moments that matter

Short, clear chapters your child can read alone or with you.

  • 100 real-life scenarios

From a plan that suddenly changes to a phone that dies on the way home, each scenario walks through what is happening and the smart moves to make.

  • The Stop. Notice. Think. Choose. routine

One easy routine kids can remember under pressure and use anywhere: at school, online, out with friends, or at home.

  • “What Could You Say?” scripts

Real words kids can actually use, written the way kids talk, so saying no or asking for help feels natural.

  • For Parents tips in every chapter

Short, practical notes to help you talk it through, practice at home, and respond calmly when your child comes to you.

  • A Street-Smart Toolkit

Handy tools to keep and come back to, so the skills stick long after the last page.

About the Author

Nadia Merrick

Nadia Merrick is a mom who believes the best way to keep kids safe is to help them become capable. She wrote Street-Smart Kids: Level Up because “be careful” isn’t a plan. Kids need to know what to do, what to say, and who to go to when real life doesn’t go the way they expected. Her approach is calm and practical: small skills, practiced at home, handed over one step at a time. She creates books and free resources that help families raise confident, independent kids.

Street-Smart Kids: Level Up is the first book in the Level Up series.
